About Us

The Ottawa County Genealogical Society was organized in 1975 by a group of like-minded people with an avid interest in both family research and local history.  Some of the objectives on the society include the encouragement and promotion of the study and enjoyment of genealogy. Also to discover, procure and preserve whatever may relate to the cultural and natural history of Ottawa County. Gathering and sharing genealogical research information in order to enable others to further their family research is also an important part of the goals of the membership.

In addition to publishing a genealogy quarterly (Smoke Signals) for most of this time, monthly meetings that always contain at least one genealogy related program or topic have occurred continuously. In addition to interesting monthly programs, they group will also continue visit various genealogy collections for research purposes as a group.

Within the membership of this society one can find a multitude of talent which is readily shared among the members. Some of these include professional genealogists and nationally known genealogical and historical speakers as well as published authors. Various members also conduct research tours, teach classes and provide Web services.  Additionally, the society supports other genealogical and historical organizations in the tri-state area and has plans for continuing to exchange programs with other area groups.
